OVERVIEW
Congratulations on purchasing the ZOOOOS Interactive DVD System! ZOOOOS completely transforms ordinary DVD players into interactive playgrounds of fun and learning. A great variety of ZOOOOS programs and activities are available with many more in the production pipeline. You’ll be able to read and play interactive books, games, learning activities and more. And it all happens on your DVD player. See your retailer or www.ZOOOOS.com for a complete list of available titles.
ZOOOOS programs are created in collaboration with McREL, the leading authority on educational standards. This assures that ZOOOOS programs are wholesome for kids and helps build strong foundations for their formal education.
All ZOOOOS programs offer opportunities for you to participate with your child, or your child can play the entire program on their own. It’s so simple that even very small children can do it.
The ZOOOOS controller is a specialized universal remote control, and you’ll need to set it up to work with your particular DVD player. Complete instructions for the simple setup process are found on every ZOOOOS DVD. Just press the MENU button on your regular remote control to access the Setup Guide and more.

Battery Installation
- The battery compartment is located on the back of the controller.
- Remove the screw to open the battery compartment cover.
- This unit requires 2 “AAA” batteries (NOT INCLUDED).
- Always replace both batteries at the same time.
- Replace battery compartment cover and screw.
Replace exhausted batteries.
If your DVD player does not respond properly to the controller, you may need to install fresh batteries. After replacing the batteries you do NOT need to re-program the controller – the code you programmed will automatically be saved.

How to set up your ZOOOOSTM controller
Before you can use your ZOOOOS controller, you must set it up with the right code for your particular DVD player.
These printed instructions are provided as a convenience, but it is necessary to use the on-screen instructions to assure a proper setup. When you use the onscreen instructions, the DVD player will be able to respond to let you know when you have found the right code for your DVD player.
Every ZOOOOS DVD includes a Parent Content section with onscreen setup instructions and more. Just press the MENU button on your regular DVD remote any time a ZOOOOS DVD is playing in your DVD player to access the Parent Content and the Setup Guide.
Working from on-screen setup instructions allows your DVD player to respond and let you know when you have found the right code. Onscreen setup instructions on every ZOOOOS DVD also means you don’t need printed instructions to take your ZOOOOS controller to a new location.
Getting Ready for Setup
Setup can take a few minutes or longer, so you may want to do it when small children are not present.
- Install two AAA batteries in your ZOOOOS controller.
- It is recommended that you turn off any screen-saver functions that your DVD player may have. The screen saver may interrupt the setup process, and it may also interfere with your child’s use of the ZOOOOS system.
- Make sure there’s nothing between the controller and your DVD player any time you use the ZOOOOS controller. This is especially important while you’re setting up your ZOOOOS controller. Make sure the ZOOOOS controller is pointing toward your DVD player during the entire setup procedure.
- Make sure the audio on your TV is turned up so that you can hear it clearly.
Setup Overview
- Put a ZOOOOS DVD into your DVD player and let it start to play.
- Press MENU on your regular DVD remote control to access the Parent Content menu.
- Most ZOOOOS DVD’s will allow you to choose either English or Spanish to continue.
- Once you have selected a language, select Setup Guide from the menu.
- Choose one of ZOOOOS’ three setup methods. (Described on the following pages and on the DVD)
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
That’s it!

Setup Method 1: DIRECT ENTRY
Direct Entry allows you to look up your DVD player on a list and manually enter its code into the controller. This is the most common way to set up a universal remote.
- Find the Direct Entry instructions in the on-screen Setup Guide. Your DVD player must be on the on-screen code charts for Direct Entry to work properly.
- Find your player brand in the on-screen list of codes in the on-screen Setup Guide. You can also find a printed code list in this booklet. Each brand has more than one possible code, so try each one until you find the one that works with your DVD player.
- Hold the Red button until the setup light turns off, continue holding Red and press Green three times, then release both buttons. The setup light will turn on and remain on until you enter a valid code.
- Enter the first code for your brand of DVD player. After you enter a valid code the setup light will blink twice and turn off, and the controller will transmit a test signal to see if your DVD player responds.
- Wait at least 3 seconds to see if your DVD player responds. When the right code has been entered the DVD will play a message telling you to press the Home button.
- If the DVD player does not respond, repeat step 3 and try the next code for your brand of DVD player.

Setup Method 2: AUTO-SETUP
Auto Setup automatically searches for the right code for your DVD player. For most popular DVD players, Auto-Setup is the easiest method and takes from a few seconds to a few minutes. However, if your DVD player is a less-common model, this method can take over an hour or it may not work at all.
Note: If this process takes longer than 10 minutes or the time in the estimate chart, press the Home button to exit this method and switch to the Direct Entry method. You can look up your DVD player brand on the time estimate chart (in this booklet and also in the on-screen Setup Guide) to decide if Auto-Setup is right for you.
- Find the Auto-Setup instruction page in the on-screen Setup Guide. Your DVD player must be on the Auto-Setup instructions for this method to work properly.
- Enter Auto-Setup by holding down the Red button until the setup light turns off. Continue holding the Red button and press the Yellow button three times, then release both buttons. If you’ve done this correctly the light will turn back on and remain on until setup mode is exited. When the setup light remains on, the controller is in setup mode.
- Wait for a message from your DVD player. Even though you can’t see anything happening, the controller is actually loading and testing various codes. When the right code is found, a message will tell you to press the Home button. If your player doesn’t respond within about 10 Minutes or the time on the estimate chart, press the Home button to exit this method, and use the Direct Entry method instead.
- When the DVD player instructs you to press the Home button, be sure to do so before the onscreen timer runs out. If you miss pressing the Home button before the timer runs out, go ahead and wait until a message from the DVD tells you what to do. If you have not yet pressed the Home button, the DVD will instruct you to press the Back button to back up to the code you missed.
Setup Method 3: MANUAL SEARCH
Manual Search allows you to manually advance through each possible code until you find the one that works with your DVD player.
This method is usually used only if you don’t know the brand of your DVD player, or can’t find your brand on the code list. This is the most tedious of the three methods. It is recommended that you try Auto-Setup before using this method.
- Find the Manual Search instructions in the on-screen Setup Guide. Your DVD player must be on the Manual Search instructions for this method to work properly.
- Enter the Manual Search mode by holding down the Red button until the setup light turns off, continue holding the Red button and press the Blue button three times, then release both buttons. The setup light will turn on when you enter the setup mode. The light will remain on until the setup mode is exited.
- Press the Next button on the ZOOOOS controller to begin the manual search. The controller will test the first of a very long list of possible codes. There are almost a thousand possible codes, so it may take a while to find the right one for your DVD player. The most popular models come first, so the more popular your player, the sooner you’ll find the right code.
- Wait for a message from the DVD player. After you press the Next button, pause for a message from the DVD, or until the setup lights starts to blink rapidly. When the right code is reached, your DVD player will play a message telling you what to do.
- If no message plays, wait for the setup light to start blinking rapidly and press the Next button again to try the next code.
- Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the DVD player plays a message that tells you to stop.

Troubleshooting
If ZOOOOS does not work:
- Make sure the ZOOOOS DVD is not physically damaged. A damaged disc may not play.
- Make sure the ZOOOOS controller has fresh batteries and that they are properly installed. The setup light should blink whenever a button is pushed. The battery compartment is on the back side of the controller and can be accessed with a small Philips screwdriver.
- Make sure your TV and DVD player are turned on, properly connected to each other and the audio is turned up. Test your TV and DVD player with a regular DVD to make sure your system is working.
- Make sure your DVD player is capable of working with a standard wireless infrared remote control. If your DVD player does not work with a standard remote control, it won’t work with ZOOOOS.
- Make sure you are using a standard DVD video player and not a computer with a built-in DVD player. ZOOOOS is not intended for use on computers.
- Make sure the controller is pointed toward your DVD player and there is nothing between the controller and the front of your DVD player. The ZOOOOS controller uses an infrared light to send signals to your DVD player. It will not work properly if anything blocks the signal.
- Make sure you are not covering the front edge of the ZOOOOS controller with your hand or anything else. The ZOOOOS controller has four separate infrared transmitters spread in an array across the front edge of the controller, but if they are all covered, no signal can get through.
- Make sure that your DVD player is capable of playing standard DVDs. If your DVD player responds slowly to menus on standard DVDs or has other problems playing standard DVDs, it may perform poorly with ZOOOOS.
If you have trouble with Auto-Setup:
Auto-Setup is a convenient way to set up the most popular models of DVD players, however some models may not respond appropriately to this method.
- Check the time estimate chart in this booklet to see how long your player should require for setup. If your attempt to use Auto-Setup exceeds the time estimate, exit the Auto-setup mode by pressing the Home button, and switch to the Direct Entry method.
- If you have trouble with pressing the Home button when the timer appears on screen, go ahead and wait for the instructions that appear onscreen after the timer. You will be able to use the Back button to “back up” to the code that you missed.
- If you have trouble with Auto-Setup, switch to Direct Entry, which is the most common way to set up a universal remote control.
If you can’t find a code that works with your DVD player:
- Make sure you follow the instructions on the DVD. You must follow the onscreen instructions for setup to work properly.
- Your DVD player must be on the appropriate onscreen instruction page for the confirmation video to let you know you have found the right code.
- If you are using Direct Entry, make sure you try all of the codes listed for your brand of DVD player. Some code lists don’t fit completely on one page and may be continued on the next page.
- If you are sure you have tried all of the Direct-Entry codes listed for your brand, there is a possibility that you have a new model that was introduced after the ZOOOOS code library was created. The correct code may be listed under a different brand, or it may not be in the ZOOOOS library. You can use Auto-Setup or Manual Search to try each code in the ZOOOOS code library. You may also find a usable code on the ZOOOOS website: www.ZOOOOS.com where updates will be added as they are available. The easiest way to check all of the codes in the ZOOOOS library is to let Auto-Setup run undisturbed for two hours. If you miss pressing the Home button at the right moment, onscreen instructions will tell you to press the Back button to back up to the code you missed.
If you get a lot of error messages from your DVD player when using ZOOOOS:
- If you get a lot of error messages when using ZOOOOS, try using another code for your brand of DVD player from the Direct Entry code list.
HINT: If the code that is giving you problems starts with Blue, look through your brand’s codes and find the one that has the same last four buttons but starts with Red. Or if the code that is giving you problems starts with Yellow, look through your brand’s codes and find the one that has the same last four buttons but starts with Green.
